Information / Getting Around

Exploring Around

For a place having a tranquil charm of an empty island, getting around in Lombok is surprisingly easy.

  1. Bemos

Bemos or the passenger-carrying minivans are the means of transport useful for covering short and medium distances. They can be hailed from almost anywhere in Lombok, especially the major streets, and would happily take you around for short hops. Though relatively cheaper than most other modes of transportation, tourists are sometimes charged higher by the drivers who can even get you to charter the entire vehicle, if running empty. While it can seem to be a good option, it is always advisable to set the price and expectations clear, as a private hire can sometimes cost you more than a taxi. Usually, the prices of bemos vary according to the distance and shortage in supply of fuel. Bemos are also used for carrying animals such as goats or cows usually when there are fewer people inside the bemo, so be prepared to embark on an adventure of this sort.

  1. Taxis

Another option of getting around Taipei is metered taxis that are commonly found in Mataram, Ampenan, Cakranegara, Sira, Medana, and on the west coast including Senggigi and Lembar.  There are two types of taxis that run in Lombok – Bluebird and white-colored Express Taksi. Both types of taxis are equipped with meters which are to be used by drivers at all times. Bluebird taxis come in dark and light blue colors. The taxis can be hailed from anywhere in Lombok except for the dark blue taxis which can be boarded only from the airport. The taxis usually charge a higher price than most modes of transportation still it is far cheaper by the international standards.

  1. Car rental – Best way to see Lombok

There are several places in Lombok from where a car can be hired. Car rental is common and rates tend to increase during the peak season. Age, condition, and demand of the car during the peak season determine its rental charges. Petrol or gasoline is sold both at official outlets and by the roadside vendors who usually charge a higher rate per liter depending upon the time of the day and the remoteness of the location.  You can also hire a self-driven car in Lombok though it might not be a good idea for the amateur drivers. The street signs can be ambiguous and infrequent. Besides, the unfamiliarity with the road system can kill the fun of enjoying the city as it was intended to. Another major disadvantage of driving a car yourself is the large potholes, damaged roads, and undisciplined and erratic behavior on the road. At such times, hiring a car with a driver can come with great benefits. The driver takes you around the major tourist attractions plus to some places that do no become a part of the guide book. This makes renting a car with a driver the best way to see Lombok.

  1. Motorbikes

Renting a motorbike is also an option to get around in Lombok. There are many places in Mataram, Mangsit, Senggigi, Cakranegara, and elsewhere to rent a motorbike. However, like with hiring a self-driven car, great care needs to be exercised while driving motorbikes for the roads at some places can be in bad condition and without street lights. It is advisable to steer clear of the southern or remote areas of Lombok after the sun sets.
